A blue birdbath near my kitchen window draws my attention when I’m working at the sink. The color itself is refreshing and the small ripples from passing breezes are a shorthand for larger bodies of water that call my name. Interesting… such a small splash of water in the landscape can rearrange my thoughts toward more restful things.
When I visited Arizona, I found the reds, purples and browns to have a kind of beauty but did not find them restful. Then my sister-in-law took me to the Phoenix Desert Botanical Garden, and I observed how just small pools and tiny tickles of water could produce an atmosphere of tranquility in a very dry landscape.
Yes, I want to live near a body of water that produces the sound of soothing waves. But, for now, the birds and I will enjoy the water bowls and birdbaths sprinkled through the garden.
