Ripon College

Ripon College

Ripon, Wisconsin, has always been on our radar. My sister nearly took a teaching position there, but as I recall the story, a blizzard intervened.  Also, we grew up hearing tales about our great-great grandfather’s role in the 1st Wisconsin Cavalry Volunteers. The 1st Cavalry bivouacked at Camp Fremont on the Ripon College campus when the Civil War regiment was first formed. Ripon 3

Several beautiful limestone buildings used by the 1st Cav still stand. Soldiers who died in the temporary infirmary are thought to be buried in a ‘never to be developed’ green space behind those buildings. The granite marker placed in 1913 to commemorate these events has been replaced by a flat marker on the east side of the campus.

The Ripon College campus is a lovely mix of old and new. If I could rewind the clock, it would be on my list of potential colleges. Well known alumni include Spencer Tracy, Al Jerreau and Harrison Ford.
