Ripon, Wisconsin, has always been on our radar. My sister nearly took a teaching position there, but as I recall the story, a blizzard intervened. Also, we grew up hearing tales about our great-great grandfather’s role in the 1st Wisconsin Cavalry Volunteers. The 1st Cavalry bivouacked at Camp Fremont on the Ripon College campus when the Civil War regiment was first formed.
Several beautiful limestone buildings used by the 1st Cav still stand. Soldiers who died in the temporary infirmary are thought to be buried in a ‘never to be developed’ green space behind those buildings. The granite marker placed in 1913 to commemorate these events has been replaced by a flat marker on the east side of the campus.
The Ripon College campus is a lovely mix of old and new. If I could rewind the clock, it would be on my list of potential colleges. Well known alumni include Spencer Tracy, Al Jerreau and Harrison Ford.
