If you visited the Cúpla Sisters post for April 23rd, you saw the amazing paper peonies created by my sister. Since that post, we have been eagerly awaiting the arrival of real peonies created by Mother Nature with assistance from many talented plant breeders.
Peonies come in an astonishing array of colors, shapes, fragrances and growing habits. Some of the peony types are tree, intersectional (cross between tree and herbaceous), single, anemone, Japanese, double and bomb. Peonies are so reliable, so long-lived and so care free that they are a great choice for novice gardeners.
Some newer cultivars don’t require staking which I would certainly welcome. The only drawback I can see with peonies is that the blooms don’t last nearly long enough to satisfy my peony cravings. Different varieties do bloom at different times, so careful selection would provide a longer season of blooms to enjoy.
Thanks for your note and info. We admire peonies but are peony novices and NOT experts. The wonderful thing about public gardens is that we get to admire and appreciate the abilities of accomplished gardeners.
Let people know that Itoh peonies are the name of the cross breds. They are pricey but really special
