We looked about for interesting accommodations for our visit to Madrid and discovered Hotel Pattee in nearby Perry, Iowa. The hotel wears its 103 years well without showing any obvious wrinkles. A major face-lift was undertaken about twenty years ago, and carpenters who executed the finish work were obviously talented. We were impressed by the perfect miters and the seamless fit of all the substantial mahogany woodwork.
In addition to meticulous craftsman styling and abundant artwork, each of Hotel Pattee’s 40 rooms is uniquely theme-decorated. Our room was the very girly Betty Mae Harris Studio room. Betty Mae Harris was a Ziegfeld Follies performer who moved to Perry and opened a dance studio which operated for 37 years.
Bicyclists from the 89 mile trail which runs through Perry are welcomed and accommodated with inside bike storage. These cyclists might choose to book the RAGBRAI suite which pays homage to the Register’s Annual Great Bicycle Ride Across Iowa.
Hotel Pattee has a spa, two lane bowling alley, restaurant, bar, library and event rooms. Live music and other entertainment and special dining events are also part of the boutique hotel amenities available.
I am definitely going to stay there.
Hi Jacqueline. There are so many fun things to do in the area. We only had time for a few things on our list. Stay tuned to learn about fun art, music and wine opportunities. Sue
Great post. The hotel is worth checking out the next time I’m in Iowa. BTW, to get a taste of my summer adventure click http://www.rwbennettcreative.com
Okay Bob! Your travel blog makes our little adventure sound quite tame. Do check out all the miles of trails available in the Raccoon and Des Moines River Valleys. I think it could be a three or four day event if you ‘saw the sites’ along the way. Sue
Susan. Your adventure was great and didn’t take all summer. I will check out those trails. I still haven’t done my first RAGBRAI (hopefully next year). Keep up the good work with your blog. I don’t often post, but I almost always read your posts.
This looks so inviting. We always like to find bed & breakfasts that have charm an character. This looks intriguing. You were smart to make it your choice.Hats off to the people who save it.
Hi Diane. There is a real interesting story behind the restoration of Hotel Pattee. The story was a bit too involved for our little ‘vacation’ blog. You could find so many things to see and do in the area and we hope to share more and do more. Thanks for you comment. Sue
